A Canadian Manufacturing Achievement: Petra Hygienic Systems receives GMP Certification

Petra is pleased, and frankly proud of their team, to announce that after successfully completing their Stage 2 audit in late Q3 2020 by SGS, they have been awarded GMP ISO22716 certification for cosmetics. More impressively, they are one of only a few companies in all of Canada with this designation.

What Does GMP (or cGMPs) mean?

GMP (or cGMP) is an acronym for Good Manufacturing Practice (Current Good Manufacturing Practice). It’s an international standard that assures the identity, strength, quality, and purity of products by requiring the manufacturer to control their operational procedures in accordance with GMP standards. This standard is adopted by manufacturers and then enforced by third party auditing firms, and government agencies like the FDA and Health Canada. To receive GMP certification means there is an established quality management system in place within the company; everything from obtaining and verifying appropriate raw materials of quality, establishing robust operating procedures, detecting, and investigating product quality deviations, and maintaining reliable testing laboratories. This formal system of controls, if adequately put into practice, helps to prevent instances of contamination, mix-ups, deviations, failures, and general errors. All ensuring the product meets an objective quality standard.

Why Did Petra Undertake This Initiative?

As a Canadian SME, GMP certification seemed like a distant dream of Petra’s for many years, but with significant growth in recent years, specifically with their Contract Manufacturing and Private Label division, Petra’s management team decided it was time to invest significantly in their quality management system and obtaining this certification. This was no small investment and effort, affecting every facet of the business from its people, technologies, and infrastructure. More specifically, to support this effort, Petra secured a new 60,000 square foot manufacturing facility that could accommodate the physical requirements of GMP. They invested in building an in-house proprietary quality management system that was supported by one of Canada’s Government Agencies and most importantly, they hired and built an impressive QC team. The team is headed by an impressive young leader in Bengray Brillantes.

Even with his extensive pedigree, developing and deploying a QMS system in adherence with regulatory standards was no easy feat. In asking him what the biggest challenges were to accomplish this task, his response was “Developing the framework was the easier part of this initiative. However, getting key-stake holders onboard, to understand the requirements and champion them among their teams was the hard part. Company cultures are often created in vacuums, and it takes projects like this, with clearly defined expectations, and consistent communication, to shift the habits and culture of the company. I’m very proud of the team, how they responded to challenge, and adapted to the new procedures and overall mindset required to operate within a GMP environment.”

Although, Bengray speaks modestly of the effort in developing the QMS framework, that too was a massive undertaking. The 60+ Standard Operating Procedures and 100+ work checks and balances created and deployed control every component of the manufacturing business; it’s premises, equipment, personnel, sanitation procedures, manufacturing controls, quality controls, test methods, and product development.

What Does This Mean For Petra Customers??

Petra’s management team is very happy with the result and proud of their team. As a progressive and forward thinking (like a lot of our customers) manufacturer, this is just another example of how they’re investing in their teams, technologies, and infrastructure. Not only for the benefit of their staff, but their customers. Petra’s management recognizes that this accomplishment is just another investment their customers can leverage in the marketplace. As their president likes to say before biting off these ambitious projects “the better our customers do, the better we all will do. Therefore, it’s on our best interest to get this done…” It wasn’t easy, but they got it done.

So, what does this mean for Petra customers?
